The Q Train - Australia's Premier Rail Restaurant - Locally Sourced Produce

Welcome aboard The Q Train.

The Q Train is an award winning restaurant that travels along the historic Bellarine Railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff. The train usually departs from, and returns to, Drysdale Station, just an easy 15-minute drive from Geelong. However, on select services The Q Train departs from, and returns to, the Queenscliff Railway Station. Please check the timetable page before booking accommodation to choose a time and departure station that suits you. The Q Train runs for approximately 3 hours.

Never before has Australia seen a heritage rail line used for showcasing local food, wine, beer and cider. We’re inviting locals and visitors alike to come aboard our restored carriages and enjoy a gastronomical journey unlike anything else you have experienced. In 2019 Australian Masterchef were wowed by the experience and hosted one of their Finals episodes on board The Q Train!

We are serving local produce on every journey from the comfort of our refurbished dining cars; providing every customer with a delicious rail journey, and unique views of Swan Bay and the Bellarine.

Wine and dine in style with The Q Train.

*The Q Train clearly displays departure stations and times on our timetable page. Please check your confirmation email carefully for departure times and stations, as refunds cannot be given if you miss the train. Call us on (03) 4238 3930 if you have questions.

Behind Geelong’s Dining Train

In 2016, two blokes who’d worked with trains for the better part of 50 years purchased several historic carriages from Queensland Rail. They sought the expertise of a hospitality pundit, and then our team was born. We spent a year or so refurbishing the old carriages, and have transformed a part of the old “Sunlander” into a new boutique rail restaurant called “The Q Train”. How’s that for recycling?!

If you live around the Bellarine area, you may see us working on restoring and maintaining the carriages, which is an ongoing job!

As long term homeowners on the Bellarine Peninsula, we have dreamed of creating a Restaurant Train to showcase the beautiful Bellarine and Swan Bay scenery, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. The Q Train is the realisation of this and we are proud to share this vision with Geelong, The Bellarine and beyond!

Let'sTalk About Food

What is a degustation?
A degustation is great way for restaurants to take their guests on a culinary journey. (A metaphorical journey – not all restaurants are on wheels!) With a number of smaller courses, guests can try many different flavours and combinations that, while being quite different from each other, all tie together as well. Sometimes degustations are called “tasting menus” or “chefs selections” or “feed me menus”. The word “degustation” comes from the French word for taste.

Why should I try The Q Train’s degustation?
Every one of our courses highlights local produce, and there is no other restaurant in the world where you get to experience the best produce from the region while travelling through that region! Our menu changes seasonally, and can be paired with some of the finest beer, wine and cider from Bellarine, Geelong, and the Otways.

Will I be too full or still hungry at the end?
Just like baby bear’s porridge, we think the amount you receive over your three hour culinary journey is just right. The portions are carefully planned so you can appreciate every course, and not be uncomfortable when you leave. Of course, not everyone is the same. Don’t starve yourself to ‘make room’ before you come, and if you’re coming for lunch, you will still have room for dinner that night.

  • 5 star ratingPerfect evening We boarded the Q Train at Drysdale on 2nd February 2018. What an unique treat we were in for! The train, staff, food and wine all excellent. Loved all the Degustation Menu. We are locals so I was very happy everything is sourced around the Bellarine. It’s a train for adults not for children they would hate it.

  • 5 star ratingFantastic Night Out The Q Train was a really fun night out. The food was lovely and it was nice to see the scenery going past. Half of the trip was in darkness as we went in autumn, would consider going at height of summer to get a bit more of the view! Staff were very attentive.

  • 5 star ratingBirthday Celebrations We went with another couple to celebrate the wives Birthdays. Booking was easy and from the moment we arrived we knew we were in for a special night. The train is a little crowded but it makes it very cosy. Would suggest going earlier in the year so you can see more towards Queenscliff.

Food was excellent and presentation perfect.

Being able to get off and stretch your legs and take photos was a bonus.

Staff offering to take your photo on the red carpet as you arrive is a nice touch.

First Class would be a romantic option for two.

    Highly recommended trip.

  • 5 star ratingFantastic food and lovely summer trip Traveled from Queenscliff on the Q Train. Great way to spend a leisurely afternoon with great local food and wine whilst viewing the Bellarine countryside in full summer. The variation of wet lands with birds, vineyards and rolls of collected hay make a pleasant panorama to enjoy over lunch. Cannot recommend the trip enough. We did lunch but it is also available for dinner. Coming from Melbourne we had the choice of going down the Geelong road or taking the Ferry from Sorrento. We went by road as January coastal traffic would have been frightful to go to Sorrento. Wonderful day out

  • 5 star ratingFantastic experience We travelled on the lunchtime journey today. It was a unique and most enjoyable experience.

Matthew was a great host who was happy to meet your every request and Nathan and Sarah did a great job with the food.

Would thoroughly recommend the first class experience, it’s definitely worth the few extra dollars.

As the menu changes seasonally, we look forward to another trip on the Q Train soon.

  • 5 star ratingSuperb meal whilst trundling through the Bellarine We thoroughly enjoyed the six-course degustation with matched wines in the comfort of the First Class section of the Q Train. The selection of locally sourced food and wine showcases why the Bellarine is the premier foodie peninsula in Victoria. Starting with the Port Phillip Bay Snapper Ceviche matched with Banks Road Pinot Grigio, was a flavour explosion. This was followed by the Lonsdale Tomato Drysdale Goat Cheese matched with Oneday Estate Rose. The flavours and the textures were expertly combined. Mount Moriac Sticky Soy Vinegar Beef was devoured whilst enjoying a Bellarine Estate Fume Blanc. The Great Ocean Duck Salad was so delicious with Ginger, Roast duck, green mango, honey, oyster mushrooms, Vietnamese mint, tatsoi, purple basil, garlic shoots and a crisp sesame cracker, the Oakdene Pinot Noir was a perfect match. The highlight of the meal was the Barongarook Pork Belly, it was crisp on the outside as it should be and unctuous on the inside, the Robin Brockett Amphora Syrah was an inspired wine to go with this stunning dish. the meal was topped off by a Lard A** Lemon Thyme Parfait. As Donkey states in Shrek, 'Everyone loves Parfait', and this is an excellent example of why, creamy, tart and delectable, the Jack and Jill Sparkling was a great option as well.

So the food is superb, the First Class is definitely the way to go if you want a quiet peaceful experience, eating great food and watching the changing landscape of the Bellarine Peninsula slowly pass by your window

There are a couple of stops on the journey, which gives a great opportunity to get off the train and stretch the legs. The cocktail list is well thought out and if you are in First Class, your personal waiter will bring them to your table, or alternatively, you can take a stroll down the train to the bar. All in all a fantastic experience which we will be doing again. An additional note to all those celiacs, all the dishes served were Gluten Free.

  • 5 star ratingA journey to remember Booked for my wife's 50th birthday. Great experience. We took the first class option as it comes with paired with wines and your own room. The food is amazing, it's degustation so don't think it's 250g of ribeye and mounds of potato.

Staff are attentive and informed about the local wines and local produce. You get to get off at stations and walk around, talk to people if you want.

All in all, a great night.
