Welcome aboard The Q Train.
The Q Train is a restaurant that travels along the historic Bellarine Railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff. The train usually departs from, and returns to, Drysdale Station, just an easy 15-minute drive from Geelong. However, on select services The Q Train departs from, and returns to, the Queenscliff Railway Station. Please check the timetable page before booking accommodation to choose a time and departure station that suits you. The Q Train runs for approximately 3 hours.
Never before has Australia seen a heritage rail line used for showcasing local food, wine, beer and cider. We’re inviting locals and visitors alike to come aboard our restored carriages and enjoy a gastronomical journey unlike anything else you have experienced.
We are serving local produce on every journey from the comfort of our refurbished dining cars; providing every customer with a delicious rail journey, and unique views of Swan Bay and the Bellarine.
Wine and dine in style with The Q Train.
*The Q Train clearly displays departure stations and times on our timetable page. Please check your confirmation email carefully for departure times and stations, as refunds cannot be given if you miss the train. Call us on (03) 4238 3930 if you have questions.
A couple of years ago, two blokes who’d worked with trains for the better part of 50 years purchased several historic carriages from Queensland Rail. They sought the expertise of a hospitality pundit, and then our team was born. We’ve spent the last year or so refurbishing the old carriages, and have transformed a part of the old “Sunlander” into a new boutique rail restaurant called “The Q Train”. How’s that for recycling?!
If you live around the Bellarine area, you may have seen us working on restoring the carriages over the last 12 months.
As long term homeowners on the Bellarine Peninsula, we have dreamed of creating a Restaurant Train to showcase the beautiful Bellarine and Swan Bay scenery, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. The Q Train is the realisation of this and we are proud to share this vision with Geelong, The Bellarine and beyond!
What is a degustation?
A degustation is great way for restaurants to take their guests on a culinary journey. (A metaphorical journey – not all restaurants are on wheels!) With a number of smaller courses, guests can try many different flavours and combinations that, while being quite different from each other, all tie together as well. Sometimes degustations are called “tasting menus” or “chefs selections” or “feed me menus”. The word “degustation” comes from the French word for taste.
Why should I try The Q Train’s degustation?
Every one of our courses highlights local produce, and there is no other restaurant in the world where you get to experience the best produce from the region while travelling through that region! Our menu changes seasonally, and can be paired with some of the finest beer, wine and cider from Bellarine, Geelong, and the Otways.
Will I be too full or still hungry at the end?
Just like baby bear’s porridge, we think the amount you receive over your three hour culinary journey is just right. The portions are carefully planned so you can appreciate every course, and not be uncomfortable when you leave. Of course, not everyone is the same. Don’t starve yourself to ‘make room’ before you come, and if you’re coming for lunch, you will still have room for dinner that night.
Sail from either Docklands to Portarlington or from Sorrento to Queenscliff on board the ferry, arrive in beautiful Portarlington or Queenscliff and you will be transported to The Q Train.
Diners will then experience The Q Train’s amazing degustation, featuring local Bellarine produce, in The Q Train’s refurbished carriages. The train will travel a return journey towards Queenscliff or Drysdale with views of Swan Bay and local scenery.
After lunch, you’ll be transported back to the ferry where you can sail to Docklands or Sorrento whilst dreaming of your wonderful meal and your next visit.
A great day out We were given a gift voucher for the Q-train (Sail, rail & dine) for an anniversary gift. What an experience for something we had never even heard of.After catching the ferry from Docklands across the bay to Port Arlington, we were met by the lovely mini bus crew and driven to the train. We were greeted by the fantastic staff and shown to our carriage and table. The staff were so hospitable and full of knowledge about the meals they were serving us. Excellent food, wines and so relaxing. The short breaks were great to get off and stretch the legs. We so enjoyed ourselves we have been telling everyone about what a great day it was. More
50th Wedding celebration Last Thursday a group of 8 friends along with my wife & I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with a fabulous trip from Docklands to the Q train .Everything was great, from the staff to the food & it was just a great day out on a train with so much history. The ferry was excellent & so was Joe the bus driver who drove us from Portarlington to the Q train. Can I also mention that Marco who runs Star Tour limo service provided excellent vehicles ( clean & comfortable ) his mobile # is 0427 280 825. Scorecard for everyone involved on the day is a big 10 !!
The QTest On a Daylight trip, Staff were lovely, - helpful, informative, and ready to please.Train departs at a leisurely pace, and remains so. It's only a trip of less than 20 Kilometres and covered in around an hour and a half, so it has to be a leisurely smooth ride. Mostly rolling hill farmland for scenery. Many of the views are only available from the train, so you get to see some of the Bellarine that you would not see normally, however the train does not turn around, so what you view one way, will be the same going back.Ten minutes in for the first course to arrive (beetroot mix), then 20 - 40 minutes between courses. Our table was near the entry door, so was constantly served last, and missed out on some of the bread offerings that had run out before getting to us. (not a minor con). Also noticed some tables with serviettes, sliced lemon in the water glasses & mini forks for some dishes. We got none of the above. (minor cons). At the end of the train is a club car (first or last carriage depending on travel direction), that was virtually unused on our trip... Bar, dance floor, comfy couches etc, would be great for a large group to get together in.Menu book with food & train information, plus useful background details on many of the ingredient suppliers sits on the window ledge beside the table, and falls down a lot.(annoying minor con). Very limited white wine menu by the glass, but great selection of local beers. No souvenirs available to purchase also seems strange. You may think from the above that we were not happy with our day on the Q-train, but those are all only minor issues that are easily fixed, and any issues are easily overshadowed by the food.A set 6 course "degustation" menu of local region food so divine that I wanted to eat the plates they were served on. Seriously. Even the Butter, Bread & Seasonings mix is above average quality.Menu is available to view on Q-Train website, so won't go through it here, but be assured, it is delicious, mouth watering memorable and worth the price of admission alone.
Total treat A terrific treat of a birthday present for my 50th was a first class degustation experience on board the Q Train. We were welcomed beautifully and settled in to our compartment for two as the Queenslander train slowly chuffed out of the Station. The six course menu with beverages was delicious and faultless, served with professionalism and balance. I’m telling everyone I know.....and even you all who I don’t know! Book it!
Great Day trip from Melbourne We caught the fast Port Phillip catamaran ferry from Docklands, about an hour and a half to Port Arlington, thence 20 minutes by bus to Queenscliff to catch the Q train, which consists of dining carriages originally built for the Queensland Sunlander, and recently renovated. The lunch was 5 courses of interesting locally sourced food, attractively presented, no doubt in a manner to appeal to Instagram enthusiasts. The train follows a short but scenic route beside Swan Bay, then, after a half hour stop at Drysdale, makes a leisurely return to Queenscliff. Drinks are available from the bar. We returned by bus back to Port Arlington to catch the return ferry trip, arriving back shortly before 6pm. A most pleasant scenic and relaxing day, ideal for a special occasion. More
Trains and food - what's not to like?! Morning ferry from Melbourne to Port Arlington followed by a leisurely train journey whist enjoying gourmet food and wine, all locally sourced. The scenery is not particularly picturesque but that's not the point. It's all about the restored train and the food. The waiter explains each course, the source of the ingredients and the matching wine. We did the first class carriage; not cheap at £100 a piece but well worth it.Unique experience.
Perfect evening We boarded the Q Train at Drysdale on 2nd February 2018. What an unique treat we were in for! The train, staff, food and wine all excellent. Loved all the Degustation Menu. We are locals so I was very happy everything is sourced around the Bellarine. It’s a train for adults not for children they would hate it.
Q for quite nice The Q train was a really nice, unique experience. My partner and I got a voucher for the first class experience. We had a nice spacious private booth and were waited on by a lovely gentleman who was quite knowledgeable. You have 6 courses over 3 hours, with matching wines in first class. We had 2 stops where you could get off to stretch your legs and check out the disco bar, where you can get a variety of other drinks. The food was nice, great to see they use mostly local ingredients too. A great experience overall!
Birthday Celebrations We went with another couple to celebrate the wives Birthdays. Booking was easy and from the moment we arrived we knew we were in for a special night. The train is a little crowded but it makes it very cosy. Would suggest going earlier in the year so you can see more towards Queenscliff.Food was excellent and presentation perfect. Being able to get off and stretch your legs and take photos was a bonus. Staff offering to take your photo on the red carpet as you arrive is a nice touch.First Class would be a romantic option for two. Highly recommended trip.
