Welcome aboard The Q Train.
The Q Train is an award winning restaurant that travels along the historic Bellarine Railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff. The train usually departs from, and returns to, Drysdale Station, just an easy 15-minute drive from Geelong. However, on select services The Q Train departs from, and returns to, the Queenscliff Railway Station. Please check the timetable page before booking accommodation to choose a time and departure station that suits you. The Q Train runs for approximately 3 hours.
Never before has Australia seen a heritage rail line used for showcasing local food, wine, beer and cider. We’re inviting locals and visitors alike to come aboard our restored carriages and enjoy a gastronomical journey unlike anything else you have experienced. In 2019 Australian Masterchef were wowed by the experience and hosted one of their Finals episodes on board The Q Train!
We are serving local produce on every journey from the comfort of our refurbished dining cars; providing every customer with a delicious rail journey, and unique views of Swan Bay and the Bellarine.
Wine and dine in style with The Q Train.
*The Q Train clearly displays departure stations and times on our timetable page. Please check your confirmation email carefully for departure times and stations, as refunds cannot be given if you miss the train. Call us on (03) 4238 3930 if you have questions.
In 2016, two blokes who’d worked with trains for the better part of 50 years purchased several historic carriages from Queensland Rail. They sought the expertise of a hospitality pundit, and then our team was born. We spent a year or so refurbishing the old carriages, and have transformed a part of the old “Sunlander” into a new boutique rail restaurant called “The Q Train”. How’s that for recycling?!
If you live around the Bellarine area, you may see us working on restoring and maintaining the carriages, which is an ongoing job!
As long term homeowners on the Bellarine Peninsula, we have dreamed of creating a Restaurant Train to showcase the beautiful Bellarine and Swan Bay scenery, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. The Q Train is the realisation of this and we are proud to share this vision with Geelong, The Bellarine and beyond!
What is a degustation?
A degustation is great way for restaurants to take their guests on a culinary journey. (A metaphorical journey – not all restaurants are on wheels!) With a number of smaller courses, guests can try many different flavours and combinations that, while being quite different from each other, all tie together as well. Sometimes degustations are called “tasting menus” or “chefs selections” or “feed me menus”. The word “degustation” comes from the French word for taste.
Why should I try The Q Train’s degustation?
Every one of our courses highlights local produce, and there is no other restaurant in the world where you get to experience the best produce from the region while travelling through that region! Our menu changes seasonally, and can be paired with some of the finest beer, wine and cider from Bellarine, Geelong, and the Otways.
Will I be too full or still hungry at the end?
Just like baby bear’s porridge, we think the amount you receive over your three hour culinary journey is just right. The portions are carefully planned so you can appreciate every course, and not be uncomfortable when you leave. Of course, not everyone is the same. Don’t starve yourself to ‘make room’ before you come, and if you’re coming for lunch, you will still have room for dinner that night.
Sail from either Docklands to Portarlington or from Sorrento to Queenscliff on board the ferry, arrive in beautiful Portarlington or Queenscliff and you will be transported to The Q Train.
Diners will then experience The Q Train’s amazing degustation, featuring local Bellarine produce, in The Q Train’s refurbished carriages. The train will travel a return journey towards Queenscliff or Drysdale with views of Swan Bay and local scenery.
After lunch, you’ll be transported back to the ferry where you can sail to Docklands or Sorrento whilst dreaming of your wonderful meal and your next visit.
Awesome We travelled on The Q Train in first class and right from arriving at the station and being greeted with a glass of bubbly and a little taste tempter we knew it was going to be an amazing experience and we were not disappointed. Everything was superb from the food, to matching wines and of course our own waiter Matt. Could not fault anything, well worth every dollar spent.
Vegetarian Delight Had a wonderful time with friends on a cold wintery night . Local gin and warm rum cocktails were a delight . The special thing for me was my 6 vegetarian courses all came at the same time as friends and looked the same ! Even though the pork belly had been swapped for tofu ! .Each meal carefully thought out and so delicious and not your standard pumpkin and eggplant but each meet meat item had been substituted for something special with a difference .Highly recommend
Brilliant ... absolutely brilliant !!! We were on-boarded at 6pm, this gave us 30-minutes to enjoy a cold beverage, which in this instance was a local legend in the making, Teddy & the Fox Gin and Fever Tree tonic in the drinks carriage ... a quirky 1970's disco carriage found somewhere in the annals of Queensland's vast rail network. At the 6.30pm departure time we were ushered into the dining carriage. The carriage is classically simple and elegantly appointed. There were tables of two, four and one table of six.The degustation is a showcase of food and wine from the wonderful Bellarine peninsular. Proceedings commenced with crusty bread, dip, extra virgin oil and salt & pepper. Each dish in this six (6) course degustation was a highlight and more importantly, the food journey was a meticulously orchestrated ascension of textures and flavours ... a difficult task indeed when it comes multi-course degustation. Our food journey included, ceviche snapper, goats cheese salad, cured beef, duck salad, pork belly and lemon parfait. If I had to pick the standout, it would be the snapper followed very closely by the duck. Putting the quality of the degustation into some perspective, I recently travelled on a Q plane ... Qantas First Class, and their Neil Perry lounge and in-flight offerings were a very poor third cousin to the Q Train. A three (3) hour 33km of wonderfully cathartic train travel through farmlands, vineyards and along the coast, including a couple of well timed stops.Staff were amazingly professional and accommodating, a real credit to the culture and ethos of their employer. An absolutely world-class, thoroughly enjoyable 5-Star experience which I wholeheartedly recommend.
Q for quite nice The Q train was a really nice, unique experience. My partner and I got a voucher for the first class experience. We had a nice spacious private booth and were waited on by a lovely gentleman who was quite knowledgeable. You have 6 courses over 3 hours, with matching wines in first class. We had 2 stops where you could get off to stretch your legs and check out the disco bar, where you can get a variety of other drinks. The food was nice, great to see they use mostly local ingredients too. A great experience overall!
Perfect evening We boarded the Q Train at Drysdale on 2nd February 2018. What an unique treat we were in for! The train, staff, food and wine all excellent. Loved all the Degustation Menu. We are locals so I was very happy everything is sourced around the Bellarine. It’s a train for adults not for children they would hate it.
Fine dining on rails while the scenery changes. For several decades "The Sunlander" train carried passengers from Brisbane to Cairns and back. When it was retired from service a few years ago some train enthusiasts on the Bellarine bought a number of carriages and power car and converted them into a fine-dining restaurant on rails. It now plies on the scenic railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff - about 18 km - as "The Q Train". First thing to understand is that this is not a train ride where you get served some food. Rather, it is a fine-dining restaurant which happens to be moving (slowly and gently) and where the scenery outside the restaurant window is constantly changing. The emphasis is on the food, and the fact that the restaurant is on rails adds charm and interest. The food is first class, and along with the wines is almost all sourced locally on the Bellarine Peninsula. It is served as a degustation menu with 6 courses, and different dietary requirements are catered for without difficulty. Service is excellent, with staff attentive but not obtrusive. Depending on the booking, the train might commence at Drysdale and go to Queenscliff and then return to Drysdale, or it might do the trip in reverse order. Bookings can be made for daytime luncheon trips or nighttime dinner trips. The Bellarine is a lovely picturesque area, and the scenery varies from paddocks with sheep horses and cattle, to bushland, to the coastal scenery...
