Welcome aboard The Q Train.
The Q Train is a restaurant that travels along the historic Bellarine Railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff. The train usually departs from, and returns to, Drysdale Station, just an easy 15-minute drive from Geelong. However, on select services The Q Train departs from, and returns to, the Queenscliff Railway Station. Please check the timetable page before booking accommodation to choose a time and departure station that suits you. The Q Train runs for approximately 3 hours.
Never before has Australia seen a heritage rail line used for showcasing local food, wine, beer and cider. We’re inviting locals and visitors alike to come aboard our restored carriages and enjoy a gastronomical journey unlike anything else you have experienced.
We are serving local produce on every journey from the comfort of our refurbished dining cars; providing every customer with a delicious rail journey, and unique views of Swan Bay and the Bellarine.

A couple of years ago, two blokes who’d worked with trains for the better part of 50 years purchased several historic carriages from Queensland Rail. They sought the expertise of a hospitality pundit, and then our team was born. We’ve spent the last year or so refurbishing the old carriages, and have transformed a part of the old “Sunlander” into a new boutique rail restaurant called “The Q Train”. How’s that for recycling?!
If you live around the Bellarine area, you may have seen us working on restoring the carriages over the last 12 months.
As long term homeowners on the Bellarine Peninsula, we have dreamed of creating a Restaurant Train to showcase the beautiful Bellarine and Swan Bay scenery, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. The Q Train is the realisation of this and we are proud to share this vision with Geelong, The Bellarine and beyond!
What is a degustation?
A degustation is great way for restaurants to take their guests on a culinary journey. (A metaphorical journey – not all restaurants are on wheels!) With a number of smaller courses, guests can try many different flavours and combinations that, while being quite different from each other, all tie together as well. Sometimes degustations are called “tasting menus” or “chefs selections” or “feed me menus”. The word “degustation” comes from the French word for taste.
Why should I try The Q Train’s degustation?
Every one of our courses highlights local produce, and there is no other restaurant in the world where you get to experience the best produce from the region while travelling through that region! Our menu changes seasonally, and can be paired with some of the finest beer, wine and cider from Bellarine, Geelong, and the Otways.
Will I be too full or still hungry at the end?
Just like baby bear’s porridge, we think the amount you receive over your three hour culinary journey is just right. The portions are carefully planned so you can appreciate every course, and not be uncomfortable when you leave. Of course, not everyone is the same. Don’t starve yourself to ‘make room’ before you come, and if you’re coming for lunch, you will still have room for dinner that night.
Sail from either Docklands to Portarlington or from Sorrento to Queenscliff on board the ferry, arrive in beautiful Portarlington or Queenscliff and you will be transported to The Q Train.
Diners will then experience The Q Train’s amazing degustation, featuring local Bellarine produce, in The Q Train’s refurbished carriages. The train will travel a return journey towards Queenscliff or Drysdale with views of Swan Bay and local scenery.
After lunch, you’ll be transported back to the ferry where you can sail to Docklands or Sorrento whilst dreaming of your wonderful meal and your next visit.
Anniversary meal on the Q Train Excellent meal on the Q Train as an anniversary gift from our sons. Had a pre-meal drink in the bar carriage before enjoying the meal and drinks. I had the beer selection with the meal and my wife opted for the wine choice. Cannot fault the experience, our waiter was polite and knowledgable with regards to the food and the drinks. The weather wasn't the best so the views of the countryside could have been better. Fantastic evening.
What a way to spend a day! What a wonderful train experience. We got on at the old Drysdale station and headed towards Queenscliff at a ver leisurely pace, probably 10 kph. We booked a table for 6 as part of a 50th wedding anniversary. The magnificent food consisted of 6 courses and was delightful. The train stopped at a little siding called Suma Park named after the old homestead, then onto Queenscliff station. Thoroughly recommend it!
Degustation Delight We tried The Q Train to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We took a lunch train journey as it gave us the opportunity to view the countryside that has finally turned green after recent rain. We were greeted with a welcome drink and small canape before boarding the train. On leaving Drysdale Station the train travelled slowly along the tracks whilst we enjoyed our five course degustation menu. All of the courses were very tasty and we were able to change one of the courses for the vegetarian option. Our only comment was that coffee/tea should be included in the meal cost. All alcohol beverages are an extra. The other thing that we found a little off putting was when the staff were coming around to each table to settle the drinks account we were asked for feedback rather than being asked to fill out a written comment. This meant that everyone within hearing distance could hear if you had a negative comment to make. – which we didn’t. More
Outstanding I could not fault this dining experience. Wow, absolutely magnificent. What a great way to while away 3 1/2 hours. As one in our party said, ' it's so relaxing ' . We were greeted warmly on our our arrival at the station. We had a table for six ( there's only two, one at each end so book early if this is needed ) and is was beautifully set up. The six courses were mouth watering and well presented. The staff also made our trip, really attentive and friendly and nothing a problem. There's a drinks carriage you can go to at the beginning but then the staff get the drinks for you. It's lovely travelling along eating fab food and admiring the countryside. There are a couple of stops so you can stretch your legs.To top it off the chef came and introduced himself to each table at the end and we all thought that was a great touch.Fabulous dining experience, thank you Q Train.
A modern twist on a Bygone era. An anniversary gift from my husband, we combined a dinner on the Q Train with an overnight stay at Drysdale House Bed & Breakfast - a truly wonderful experience. The gorgeous B & B was opposite the Drysdale station, where our train journey began. The train has been loveling restored into a 5 star dining restaurant. We took the first class experience, a 6 course dinner with matching wines, served in an old sleeper compartment which has been remodeled into an intimate dining area for two. The food was delicious and all of the produce comes from local suppliers, as did the wines. The service was brilliant, the staff were all very knowledgeable, friendly & attentive. The train journeys along the old Bellarine Pennisula tourist railway, with gorgeous views of the surrounding area. One of the highlights was watching the sunset over Swan Bay. We had two stops to stretch our legs during the journey. For that next special occasion, I definitely give the Q Train a big thumbs up! More
Fine dining on rails while the scenery changes. For several decades "The Sunlander" train carried passengers from Brisbane to Cairns and back. When it was retired from service a few years ago some train enthusiasts on the Bellarine bought a number of carriages and power car and converted them into a fine-dining restaurant on rails. It now plies on the scenic railway between Drysdale and Queenscliff - about 18 km - as "The Q Train". First thing to understand is that this is not a train ride where you get served some food. Rather, it is a fine-dining restaurant which happens to be moving (slowly and gently) and where the scenery outside the restaurant window is constantly changing. The emphasis is on the food, and the fact that the restaurant is on rails adds charm and interest. The food is first class, and along with the wines is almost all sourced locally on the Bellarine Peninsula. It is served as a degustation menu with 6 courses, and different dietary requirements are catered for without difficulty. Service is excellent, with staff attentive but not obtrusive. Depending on the booking, the train might commence at Drysdale and go to Queenscliff and then return to Drysdale, or it might do the trip in reverse order. Bookings can be made for daytime luncheon trips or nighttime dinner trips. The Bellarine is a lovely picturesque area, and the scenery varies from paddocks with sheep horses and cattle, to bushland, to the coastal scenery... A leisurely Sunday afternoon treat It was a perfect day for a train journey through the Bellarine countryside, eating excellent local produce and chatting the afternoon away with special friends. The food served was delicious- from the Summer Picnic baskets with goats cheese, roasted pumpkin, pickles and local butter through to the scummy deconstructed Strawberry Parfait with meringue and honeycomb. Everything was so tasteful, beautifully presented and all from local produce. Portion sizes were small, but not tiny. However we had 8 courses, including a palette cleanser, and I had more than elegant sufficiency by the time the journey ended. I was more than satisfied. The Q train is not just about the food, it is an experience of a slower world where there is time to converse at length with friends, linger over food and wine, and watch the world go by. When was the last time you had a long, three hour lunch? It is definitely a special treat as it is expensive but not outrageously so when the experience is considered, not just the food.It would be lovely if coffee was included in the price. I would have enjoyed a coffee to finish but didn’t want to pay for it. Brewed coffee is not expensive to provide. The staff were delightful- friendly, knowledgeable, helpful but not intrusive. Booking process was very easy.It would be an experience I would like to repeat again, definitely.Thank you to The Q train team.
Thoroughly recommended! We went on the Q Train late last year in the first class diner. When we got there, we were greeted and escorted to our compartment and also shown the bar carriage where we had a drink before departure. Once the train left we settled into our compartment and had a wonderful 6 course dinner with matched drinks which were amazing! Staff were so helpful and knowledgeable and friendly. The train stopped a couple of times so we could get out and stretch our legs, though really we could walk around the train whenever we wanted to.
Birthday Celebration A perfect birthday experience with my husband. We were made to feel special as soon as we walked through the gate when we were asked if we'd like a photo together. We started with cocktails in the bar carriage and followed this with a delicious degustation meal using local produce with matching wine from local wineries. The service staff are well trained with their knowledge of the courses and wines. Highly recommended.
